雅思口语常用句式:老外说“A person Friday”是啥意思?
A person Friday
在英文中,Friday不仅表示星期五,同时Friday还是一个人名。
比如,Friday是英文名著《鲁宾逊漂流记》中的一个人物,星期五,他是鲁滨逊的仆人。
因此,短语“a person Friday(or man/girl Friday)”的意思跟仆人相近,指“在公司做杂活的人”,值得一提的是“a girl Friday”还可以指“非常能干,万金油,能做各式各样的工作”的那些女孩。

January and May
这个表达我们以前也讲到过。
这两个单词大家再熟悉不过了,January是一月,May是五月,但合在一起之后却不是“一月和五月”的意思。
事实上,它正确的意思是指a marriage or relationship between an older person and one considerably younger,常与marriage和romance连用,表示“老夫少妻”。
该典故源自英国作家乔叟所著的《坎特伯雷故事集》中“商人的故事”。January 和May是该故事中的两个人的名字,前者是一位男爵,他在60岁时娶了一个如花似玉的名叫may的年轻姑娘,所以后人就用a case of January and May指“老夫娶少妻”。
来源于这同一个故事的还有一个短语:to have January chicks,这里的chicks当然不是指小鸡,而是指孩子。January和May结婚后不久,May就有了孩子,所以to have January chicks意思为“老来得子”,你get到了吗?
